You will have theoretical knowledge and practical experience of dog training, behaviour and welfare. Excellent communication skills one to one, within a team, with volunteers and the public, you’ll need to be sensitive in your approach. Methodical, organised and you will also need to be able to manage your time effectively. You will be self-motivated and enthusiastic in your approach to everything you do.

Centre Trainer Job Description

 

Job Title:                     Centre Trainer

Responsible to:          Centre Manager

Salary:                        £18-22,000 DOE

 

Main Purpose of the Job:  To support the Centre Manager to promote the mission vision and values of the organisation, ensuring quality standards and sound dog population management, so that all dogs are cared for as outlined in our Dog Welfare policies and ensure the Centre maximises rehoming opportunities.

 

To work to achieve modification or change behaviour in dogs by assessing, providing training plans, working with and rehabilitating dogs at risk of special measures due to behaviour issues, to ensure them the best chance of a successful transition from kennels to home. To contribute to JGDR educational programme and develop services, including training to potential new owners and the general public in the care and welfare of their dogs.

 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Management Team to conduct dog assessments and to guide and advise on the suitably of dogs for behaviour modification and develop clear behaviour plans.
  2. Assist customers to select dogs through ‘Meet & Match’ appropriate to their circumstances by providing accurate and relevant information and advice. 
  3. Contribute to income generation through consultancy and puppy training classes, and other services by delivering 121  consultancy, training classes and education
  4. Ensure the highest standards of customer care are delivered to all centre visitors and contacts by presenting a professional and friendly approach both face to face and on the telephone and all other communication methods including social media.
  5. Ensure dogs available for rehoming are positively promoted to encourage rehoming including helping and supporting adopters post adoption through contact, information guides and understand our training and consultancy services
  6. Engagement and participation in talks, writing website and newsletter articles  including implementing social media policy positively promoting their work with dogs on social media platforms and our website
  7. Contributions to communications with examples of case studies, new developments
  8. Facilitating good team working with staff, volunteers, and other Centres including training Centre staff (paid and unpaid) in best practice
  9. Contribute to training programmes and the Trainers Network, connecting and liaising with other organisations to share learning and best practice across Jerry Greens

10.  Maintain accurate records on dog management database to include admission, adoption, and behaviour, financial and veterinary information as well ensuring as customer information is shared with Central Office.

11.  Be active in raising the profile of JGDR taking proactive approach with fundraising, publicity and education events and activities Support and all that you do!

12.  Care for all dogs at the Centre in an appropriate and welfare friendly manner, to include cleaning of kennels, grooming, feeding, exercise and administration of medication as required

 

 

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

-       Preferably Degree qualified or minimum of two years’ experience in rescue with extensive CPD

-       Qualified to National Diploma, NVQ2 or equivalent in animal care/welfare

-       Paid or voluntary experience of working in a dog rescue environment or equivalent

-       Willing to work beyond contracted hours to meet the welfare needs of the dog where necessary.

 

Understanding of the importance of ensuring of good dog welfare

-      Ability to contribute to the dog welfare policy, standards and procedures

-      Ability to manage and complete projects

-      Experience working with dogs and owners to modify or change behaviour through individual and group training

-      Ability to develop and deliver skills development in dog behaviour in colleagues

-      Passionate about continuous improvement of the welfare of dogs across the whole organisation

-      2 years expertise through training or experience in dog assessment to understand its behaviours and needs with evidence of making a positive contribution to  dog welfare

-      Ensures facilities are safe and fit for purpose for visitors, staff and dogs alike

-      Evidence of accurate records keeping, particularly post adoption contact and support, referrals, and euthanasia

 

Administration & Operations          

-      Understands the important of and has the ability to ensure accuracy of dog records, particularly post adoption contact and support, referrals, euthanasia’s, and foster insurances; keeps quality records of contact with vets and outside organisations

-      Organised, possessing a methodical approach to work with the ability to prioritise.

-      Dynamic and able to supports Fundraising and Communications in all areas of its work

-      Has used customer feedback to find out customers' expectations, following up on both positive and negative feedback

-      Worked in strict health and safety environment

-      Maintained animal welfare and training equipment and facilities

 

Customer Care

-      Experience of assessing and understanding needs of the public who visit us particularly matching dogs Meet & Match   

-      Able to offer good customer care, building good relationships with customers individual using feedback 

-      Experience of post adoption support  

-      Public speaking experience  

-      Experience writing and delivering training materials,  articles for website and newsletter  

-      Implementing social media policy positively promoting their work with dogs on social media platforms and our website  

-      Able to facilitate good team working with staff, volunteers, and other Centres, connecting and liaising with other organisations to share learning and best practice  

-      Full, clean UK driving license.

-      Able to communicate effectively in verbal, written and electronic media.

-      Confident in use of IT packages including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and willing to learn other commercial and bespoke packages within the organisation.

-       Self-motivated – works towards continuous improvements in behaviour with high ethical standards both personally and professionally.

-       Self-awareness - assertive and manages own stress, remaining objective and stable in stressful situations, and able to contain anxieties and emotions. Ability to work flexibly, beyond contracted hours to meet the welfare needs of the dog where necessary.

-       Positive mental attitude – recognising that good mouthing is an antidote to bad mouthing.

-       Fitness - able to maintain a suitable level of fitness
